Culture:


  • History: Guatemala has a rich Mayan history, and its independence from Spain occurred in 1821. It has experienced internal conflicts but remains a country with a deep cultural heritage. 

  • Economy: Its economy relies on agriculture, especially coffee, bananas, and cardamom, as well as tourism to archaeological sites like Tikal.  

  • Music: The marimba is the national instrument, and Mayan music influences many traditional genres. There is also a growing urban music scene. 

  • Food: Traditional dishes include tamales, pepián, and kak’ik (turkey stew). Fiambre is a dish prepared for the Day of the Dead. 

  • Traditions: Holy Week in Antigua Guatemala is one of the most impressive religious celebrations, with processions and sawdust carpets.

  • Rigoberta Menchú: A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Menchú’s work   advocating for indigenous rights has made a significant impact on the   Guatemalan-American community in the U.S.   

  • Gaby Moreno: Singer and songwriter who has gained international recognition.

  • Dr. Carlos Mejia: A physician specializing in infectious diseases, Dr. Mejia   has worked on health initiatives that serve Hispanic immigrant populations.   

  • Oscar Isaac : A Guatemalan-American actor, Isaac has brought positive visibility to   Hispanics in Hollywood with roles in major films like Star Wars and Dune.
