Culture:


  • History: Costa Rica gained independence in 1821 and is known for its democratic stability. The country abolished its army in 1949, becoming a peace reference in the region. 

  • Economy: Its economy is based on tourism, agriculture (coffee and bananas), and technology. Costa Rica is known for its commitment to environmental sustainability. 

  • Music: Calypso is a traditional genre from the province of Limón, and rhythms like reggae and cumbia are also popular. 

  • Food: Gallo pinto, casado, and corn tortillas are common dishes in Costa Rican cuisine. 

  • Traditions: The celebration of Independence Day in September and the Festival of Light are important events.


Influential Figures in the U.S.:


  • Franklin  Chang-Díaz – A NASA astronaut and physicist, Chang-Díaz   is a pioneer in space exploration and has served as a role model for Hispanic   youth interested in STEM fields.   

  • Claudia Dobles: Architect and former first lady, recognized for her work in sustainable urbanism.

  • Debi Nova  – A Grammy-nominated Costa Rican singer and activist, Nova has used her   platform to advocate for Hispanic and environmental issues.
